The state of AI API releases and retirements

This report counts only confirmed model releases with source-linked API IDs and retirements with dated announcements, cutoffs, replacements, and platform scope. It is a bounded view of the public record, not an estimate of every provider change.

Recorded activity

Four providers account for the supported 2026 ledger

Release coverage is broader than retirement coverage. The retirement rows come from Anthropic because it is the only reviewed provider whose dated history currently passes the complete lifecycle contract.

Retirement notice

A 62-day median notice period

Across the 7 qualifying 2026 retirements, notice ranged from 60 to 189 days. These are calendar days between the source’s announcement and effective retirement date.

Method and limits

The report is generated from the same repository contracts behind the public model-ID directory, API changelog, and lifecycle pages. Pricing and breaking-change counts are excluded until those event types have equivalent public evidence contracts. Detection-to-announcement lead time is also excluded because the public repository does not store a complete paired timestamp series for this sample.

Latest included event: Aug 5, 2026. Report cutoff: Aug 11, 2026.
